Housed within the Division of Student Affairs, the Center for Educational Partnerships (CEP) is the primary unit on the UC Berkeley campus charged with developing and implementing programs and strategies to improve academic preparation, expand educational opportunities, and ensure access to higher education for low-income and educationally disadvantaged students. Working in partnership with local schools, colleges and communities, CEP's college preparation and access programs support students who face significant barriers to college by helping them to improve their academic success and to explore opportunities to attend post-secondary institutions.
The PUENTE Program is a statewide academic, counseling and mentoring program that supports students in building the skills necessary for success in both academic and career goals while in high school and community college. Students enrolled in the secondary PUENTE program work closely with their Counselor, Instructors and Mentors to prepare for enrollment at four-year colleges and universities.

Responsibilities
TRAINING AND RESEARCH:
- Develops and implements year-round, research-based, and differentiated training activities and materials that are responsive to Puente teaching component training goals and site training needs;
- Ensures teaching component activities, support, and resources comply with Puente pedagogy and principles for equity and inclusion;
- As part of a cross-disciplinary team, develops and conducts the foundational institute to train Puente team members and design and implement ongoing training workshops throughout the year;
- Provides virtual and in-person professional development training and opportunities for teachers;
- Through email, telephone conversations and site visits, supports and monitors the work of teachers throughout the year;
- Keep abreast of research on educationally underrepresented student populations and provide innovative strategies and methods for site English teachers to apply in the program;
- Develops and delivers presentations at Puente and non-Puente trainings;
- Designs curriculum and implement special projects, as needed;
- Assists in development and maintenance of the secondary program databases, web-page, and other forms of social media.
PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION:
- Participates in the overall development, implementation and evaluation of Puente Secondary programs;
- Assists in the selection of qualified site program teachers;
- Manages and promotes Puente's year-round writing portfolio assessment;
- Develops reporting mechanisms for the teaching component to monitor program implementation; support the development of evaluation to determine effectiveness;
- As necessary make presentations to professional, educational and community; conferences and organizations about the middle school Puente Project;
- Works collaboratively with Puente Training Coordinators to develop and implement classroom activities, including writing, connected to the CL/M component.
- Works collaboratively with Puente Training Coordinators in the implementation of the Puente Project model, and applies quality assurance practices.
- Works with Middle School Counselor Coordinator on student data collection.
MEETINGS AND REPORTING:
- Prepares for, attends and participates in weekly Secondary Program and quarterly meetings, middle school training/professional development planning meetings and statewide conference calls;
- Provides regular and timely written reports to the program director regarding the status of sites and the teaching component;
- Attends required meetings (including but not limited to CEP, Student Affairs etc).
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated success in creating curriculum and strategies that support educationally underserved students' learning;
- Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of Latinx and other multicultural literature and cultures to facilitate students' home to school connections and accelerate students' literacy skills;
- Demonstrated understanding of asset-based approaches to teaching both adults and students;
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.
- Demonstrated success in designing and presenting workshops for English teachers virtually and in-person;
- Demonstrated success in working with colleagues and professionals to improve outcomes for educationally disadvantaged students.
- High-level skills in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing.
- Advanced knowledge of youth and adolescent development theory, including issues facing low-income, first generation and urban youth.
- Knowledge of up-to-date information on K-12 and higher education policies and issues.
- Ability to assess their impact on program strategies.
- Advanced knowledge and experience working with educational equity programs serving a diverse student population.
- Demonstrated cultural competency with respect to race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and manage multiple critical projects with deadlines.
- Strong project management skills.
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends
- Willingness and ability to travel to regional sites and statewide training sites
- Possess a valid California driver's license and willingness to use their personal car for business.
Education/Training:
- Master's degree in English / Composition / related area.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid CA Teacher Credential
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 4 years' experience in teaching English at the secondary school or university level; strong familiarity with CCSS; some experience/ familiarity with middle school language arts curriculum;
- Experience teaching AP and Honors English
- Bilingual English-Spanish speaking and writing skills strongly preferred
Salary & Benefits
- This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
- This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience.
