Position Summary:

The Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce an adjunct Piano Teacher position in the Piano Department at the Peabody Preparatory, with an anticipated start date of Summer 2023. The successful candidate will join a highly skilled and dedicated piano faculty as part of a vibrant and active department committed to helping students of all levels achieve their potential; we embrace the novice musician as well as the serious student aspiring toward a career in music. This adjunct position includes up to 9.5 hours of teaching per week.

Ideal candidates should be experienced in teaching students of all ages and levels (beginner to advanced) as part of the Peabody Preparatory's Piano Department. Candidates should be comfortable teaching private piano lessons and small group classes, as well as adult learners. Additional opportunities to develop classes and workshops according to candidate experience and interest may be available.

We are actively seeking instructors for our new Frederick Campus, located at the YMCA of Frederick County Y Arts Center in downtown Frederick, at 115 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Teachers set their own teaching schedules (subject to space availability), but after-school and/or Saturday hours will be required to meet student needs.

Duties:

-       Teach private piano lessons to students aged 5 years and older, including adults, at all skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced levels during the fall and spring semesters (32 weeks).

-       Additional teaching opportunities are available during the summer (6-8 weeks).

-       Participate in and assist with end-of-semester performances.

-       Attend occasional faculty meetings.

-       Other appropriate assignments by agreement (e.g., group piano, summer programs).

-       Opportunities may be available for candidate to develop classes and workshops according to their experience and interest.

ABOUT US: 

Founded in 1894, the Peabody Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University is Baltimore's premier community school and pre-professional academy for the performing arts. The Peabody Preparatory is part of the Peabody Institute, one of the nine divisions that comprises the Johns Hopkins University. The Preparatory has a distinguished faculty of 130 educators and serves approximately 2,500 students per week on four campuses. The Preparatory offers music and dance educational experiences ranging from early childhood classes for infants to life-long learners engaged through Peabody Plus. The dance department, dating from 1914, is one of the oldest continuously operating dance training centers in the United States.

Students can enroll in individual lessons where they can participate in repertoire classes, recitals, and competitions. Group instruction is available in dance, large ensembles, chorus, chamber music, early childhood music classes, vocal fundamentals, and music theory. In addition, the Preparatory offers more structured curricula for our most serious student through the Preparatory's academy, certificate, and pre-professional training programs.

Qualifications

-       Master's degree in piano performance and/or pedagogy is required. 

-       Doctorate degree or equivalent experience and training is highly preferred. 

-       Documented successful teaching experience required.

-       Documented successful performing experience encouraged.
