The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of San Diego, a Primarily Undergraduate Institution, is seeking applications for 3 teacher-scholar postdoctoral positions. Two of the positions are funded by research grants and will be in the labs of Dr. Timothy Clark (organic and organometallic chemistry) or Dr. David De Haan (atmospheric chemistry), and will involve undergraduate teaching, and mentoring undergraduate science majors in the research lab. The third postdoctoral research fellowship is funded through the College of Arts and Science with the goal of enhancing diversity. The final opportunity has similar expectation of teaching, research and mentoring, and the postdoc can also be mentored by Dr. Timothy Clark or Dr. David De Haan. Current research areas include: the development of metal-catalyzed borylation reactions of organic molecules; lab studies of the atmospheric aging of brown carbon aerosol in smoke plumes, and the development of inline methods for determining aerosol phase via bounce fraction measurements.
These postdoctoral research experiences are ideally suited for candidates that are interested in pursuing a faculty position at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution, as you will have opportunities to be mentored in high-level research, to teach and mentor undergraduate students / researchers, and to engage in the department culture of academic service. Start dates between 1 June and 23 August 2023 will be considered. Starting salary will be determined based on experience within the federal guidelines for exempt employees and includes comprehensive healthcare and other benefits. Qualifications The postdoc should have research expertise in organic/organometallic (Clark position) or analytical/atmospheric chemistry (De Haan position) with the ability to teach courses in chemistry, and a demonstrated interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds.
Basic qualifications: PhD in chemistry, environmental sciences, or another relevant field (must be completed by summer 2023, before starting the position) Lab research experience in synthetic organic chemistry or analytical/atmospheric chemistry Ability to work with a diverse team Ability to provide dynamic teaching and appropriate mentoring for diverse students
Preference will be given to applicants with Expertise in aerosol science (De Haan position) or synthetic organic/organometallic chemistry (Clark position) Robust communication and organizational skills Ability to design, conduct, analyze, and write up scientific experiments Strong publication records Interest in a PUI-faculty career
