Job Summary: The Teacher is responsible for developing curriculum and lesson plans, and presenting those lessons to their students, individually or in groups. Tracks the progress of students and creates reports to inform parents of the progress. The Teacher may work with graduate students and faculty to implement research projects, or supervise interns and practica students.

Additional Department Summary: The WOW Teacher is responsible for the education of youth within a self-contained residential treatment program for emotionally deregulated female youth who have been adjudicated delinquent. Located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the program is a 16-bed program that is administered by the Youth Services Institute through a management agreement with the Alabama Department of Youth Services.

The WOW teacher is expected to assist with providing educational services to challenging students and adherence to the Department of Education requirements. The teacher will use innovative approaches, including technology, to ensure the instruction provided meets the requirements for the Alabama course of study and the need for individualized academic plans for each student.

This teacher is responsible for providing an educational atmosphere where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and psychological growth. This person is responsible for supporting an instructional program in accordance with program policies and procedures.

In order to promote youth and staff safety, this person will cooperate with the program safety procedures. The WOW Teacher is a member of the therapeutic community and must utilize therapeutic skills and techniques learned during employee orientation and ongoing training to de-escalate youth experiencing crisis.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and at least one (1) year experience in secondary education that includes familiarity with the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process used for special education students. Must be certified to teach in Alabama.

The teacher will be the instructor of record for students needing content courses in secondary education with certification in specific content fields and be willing to take the Praxis in requested areas to fulfill the highly qualified status.

Skills and Knowledge: Must possess a general understanding of delinquent adolescent behavior. Ability to learn and apply various behavioral techniques related to the care and rehabilitation of adolescent females. Applicant must demonstrate use of strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm during a crisis. Proficiency in the operation of a personal computer and standard application software (word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs). Effective verbal and written communication skills in a professional setting are necessary to communicate with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis. Ability to work with diverse populations is mandatory and requires professionalism to meet obligations through efficient work habits such as, meeting deadlines, and honoring schedules, and maintaining effective and efficient record keeping procedures.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and one (1) year experience in secondary education that includes teaching familiarity in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process for special education students and experience working with at-risk youth. Language Arts/Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science are the core content fields in secondary education and applicants with certification in content areas are preferred. Applicants who are highly qualified in one content field with the ability to take and pass the Praxis II content test in a requested area will be considered. The certification by test (CBT) is a viable option for veteran teachers with valid teaching certificate who are eligible to apply for certification through the State Department of Education. The ability to learn and apply various behavioral techniques related to the care and rehabilitation of delinquent adolescent females is ideal. Classroom behavior management experience with delinquent youth is preferred.
