The Department of Education at Brown University invites applications for a Senior Lecturer or Distinguished Senior Lecturer in Education who will serve as Director of Teacher Education. Brown's urban-focused teacher education program certifies secondary school teachers who are committed to serving urban communities in a one-year MAT program and offers opportunities for undergraduate students interested in teaching as well. The program centers equity and social justice in a residency-style model and seeks to establish mutually-beneficial partnerships with our local urban schools. The Director will lead this important work. They will also teach graduate and undergraduate courses in teacher education and other areas of expertise, joining a diverse, multi-disciplinary faculty in the Education Department.
We seek a dynamic leader with experience in and commitment to high-quality teacher education who welcomes the opportunity to lead Brown's teacher education program. The Director will provide leadership and management of the program and its four areas (English, mathematics, science, and social studies); lead the work of maintaining and building upon our robust partnerships with local districts and secondary schools; coordinate with the Rhode Island Department of Education, especially in the area of licensure; and represent the program within and outside the University. The Director also will teach courses and advise students at the graduate and undergraduate levels, both inside the program and in our broader Department. Senior Lecturers are voting faculty at Brown and in the Department, eligible for renewable six-year contracts.
Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion; experience in secondary school classrooms; a proven record as an outstanding teacher educator and administrative leader; and demonstrated strength as a communicator and team builder. Applicants must have a least a master's degree in education or related fields. The ideal candidate is an intellectual and practical leader of teacher education who has experience in program management, supervising mentor teachers, and working in partnership with urban school systems. The ideal candidate will be able to build on our program's recent redesign, with a vision to support continual growth and innovation in the program. The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their teaching and leadership, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
Applicants should submit the following materials via Interfolio:
- Cover Letter (1-2 pages)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Writing sample
- A diversity statement (1-2 pages) articulating how their research, teaching, and service would contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion
- A teaching statement (1-2 pages)
- Contact information for three references. The search committee will contact references directly as needed.
Inquiries and other communications may be directed to Leah Lebel (leah_lebel@brown.edu).
