Overview
Upward Bound is a nationwide, federally-funded college preparation and access program for high schoolers who qualify as low-income and potentially first-generation college students. An essential component of Upward Bound is the six-week summer program. Cornell's Upward Bound program brings approximately 120 students from nearby school districts to our Ithaca campus to provide academic courses and enrichment activities; the mission of every summer is to prepare our students for college success by encouraging their academic progress, growing their familiarity with college lifestyle and expectations, and building their community and network of support.
Academic coursework is the heart of the Upward Bound summer program, and our goal is that each class we offer balances rigor with an engaging, joyful culture. We are federally mandated to provide courses in English, math, science, and foreign language; each student will receive approximately fourteen hours of instruction in each of these core courses. Students will be enrolled in the course they are scheduled to take in their upcoming academic year, so each summer class functions as a prep course designed to set them up for success in the next year.
