Position description
The Center for Educational Partnerships seeks qualified temporary non-tenure track, part-time Instructors (TSPs) for Summer to teach in the Pre-College Academy (PCA), a six-week college-preparatory summer program hosted by the Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) at the University of California, Berkeley. EAOP partners with schools, districts, community organizations, and families to empower underserved students and prepare them for college and career success. For over 35 years, PCA has provided intensive academic enrichment for EAOP students from partner high schools throughout the Bay Area. PCA prepares students for academic success in the following school year, including excellence in classes that meet the University of California's A-G subject requirements and enrollment in Honors and Advanced Placement courses.
PCA offers students rigorous coursework, college-style expectations and an environment of challenging academic camaraderie. Students will commit to two courses, a College Writing and Math course (Geometry, Algebra II, Integrated Math (1-3), Pre-Calculus, and Calculus). The College Writing courses are theme-based, drawing on a range of academic disciplines. Examples of courses taught in the past include: Free Me Fast: The {potentially} Liberating Linguistics of Rap, In Search Of The Self Through a Critically Analytical Lens, Decolonizing the Classroom: Radical Healing and Empowering Education, Language, Culture, and Power: Mixtape of an Activist. Additionally, students attend weekly activity sessions that may include team building, leadership activities, and college advising. All classes will be held in person at the UC Berkeley campus.
Teaching Responsibilities:
We are seeking outstanding instructors (TSPs) who can teach courses in EAOP's Pre-College Academy, grades 9-11. Successful candidates will create and implement an exciting theme-based writing course geared toward high school students who have completed their 9th and 10th-grade years or create the appropriate math curriculum that prepares students the following year.
General Duties:
Instructors will work with a teaching assistant. In addition to teaching responsibilities, duties include: preparing course materials (including syllabus, course calendar, course reader, assignments, etc.), reviewing student diagnostic tests and applying results to the course design, holding office hours, submitting student progress reports, and assigning grades, tutoring students, attending weekly staff/instructor meetings, and supervising the work of the teaching assistant. Instructors are also required to attend training sessions and student/family orientation in June prior to the start of the program on June 18, 2022, as well as a program debrief.
