Job Summary: The Lyman Briggs College (LBC) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a biology faculty position in the Academic Specialist Appointment System. This is an academic year faculty position that starts August 16, 2017. This non-tenure system position has the potential to become a long-term position. The successful candidate will join the college's vibrant biology group, and will primarily focus on teaching undergraduate biology lectures and laboratories.The biology group offers lecture and laboratory courses in general biology, including a joint chemistry-biology course for students entering with less mathematics preparation, an upper-level research-focused course, and senior seminars. Therefore, the position requires broad training in cell and organismal biology and experience teaching biology in higher education lecture and laboratory settings. The ideal candidate will be able to work with and encourage a diverse student body. The successful candidate will be committed to advancing excellence in the teaching of introductory courses in general biology and will join the college's ongoing efforts to reform undergraduate STEM education.The position offers exciting opportunities for individuals interested in teaching in a liberal-arts college environment with all of the resources of large "Big 10" research university. Founded in 1967, LBC is a vibrant residential college comprised of 2000 students and 70 faculty and staff that focuses on the study of science and its social contexts. Bridging the two cultures of the sciences and the humanities, the LBC curriculum integrates natural sciences and mathematics courses with courses in the history, philosophy, and sociology of science (science studies). LBC students select from 41 major options within their Bachelor of Science Degree Program. Nearly all of the students in LBC major in the sciences; 60% are women; 25% are students of color; 25% of LBC students also belong to MSU's Honors College. We welcome applications from strong candidates who can enhance and complement the intellectual and cultural diversity of the LBC faculty and staff.LBC faculty in the Academic Specialist Appointment System teach five courses each academic year. These LBC faculty contribute professional service to the college, including membership on LBC committees, and some of them conduct scholarship on teaching and learning. This position starts with a three-year probationary appointment that has the potential, after successful reappointment, to become a long-term position in the Academic Specialist Appointment System (for details see the MSU Academic Specialist Handbook http://www.hr.msu.edu/documents/facacadhandbooks/academic specialist/ASH_AppendixA.htm). Minimum Requirements: Candidates should be committed to undergraduate teaching and must have a Ph.D. in a Biology discipline by August 15, 2017. The successful candidate will be committed to advancing excellence in the teaching of introductory courses in general biology and will join the college's ongoing efforts to reform undergraduate STEM education.
