Advertised Summary Job Description: The Variable Hour Officer serves as an instructor for the State Pre College Enrichment Program (S-PREP). S-PREP is a free high school and college preparation program for 7th -12th grade students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine or related STEM professions. The long range objective of the program is to increase the number of minority healthcare and STEM professionals. The program offers enrichment courses geared towards preparing students for success in math and science as well as PSAT and SAT preparation courses provided by Kaplan. In addition to the rigorous academic schedule, the program offers mandatory college preparation and career development workshops, college counseling services, field trips and college tours. The program will begin on July 1, 2016 and conclude on July 29, 2016.
We are seeking Middle/High School Program Teachers to lead courses for middle and high school students who are participating in the 2016 Summer State Pre-College Enrichment Program. Courses led by Program Teachers will include Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Biology, and Chemistry. Classes will be held Mondays through Fridays at Columbia University Medical Center. Responsibilites will include: 1. Plan, teach and prepare materials for classes 2. Evaluate student and group performance 3. Recommend program improvements 4. Perform related duties as required
General Minimum Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience, plus three - five years of related experience in specific course subject matter and teaching experience is required. Strong mathematic or science background is required. MA, MS, and PhD is strongly preferred. Teaching secondary school students and educational program development is strongly preferred.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of effective classroom management and instructional techniques. Demonstration of strong content knowledge as it relates to subject matter.
Preferred Qualifications: Strong organizational skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective rapport with students and family. Sensitive to students' abilities and needs.
